Little Niceties Help You Get Well Soon

My College Park house is a pretty comfortable place. Our sofas and chairs sport big, overstuffed down cushions, and our three cats keep us fairly tolerant about little stains and claw marks that leave our furniture and rugs looking less than perfect.

In other words, I’m no Martha Stewart, and our home is no museum. Our place looks lived in, and it feels like it’s OK to live there.

But when my husband got sick a couple of weeks ago and took to our bed for nearly a week, I realized it could be even more comfortable—especially for someone who’s housebound or restricted from walking up and down stairs.

So I made a few additions to keep him comfortable—and now that he’s better, I’m keeping them around for next time. I suspect our healthy selves will make good use of these little niceties in the meantime.

1. I am blessed with a husband who never complains about “stuff.” He sleeps on lumpy pillows and under a flowery bedspread. As long as I like it, he seems to be OK with it.

So I never noticed just  how lumpy and old the pillows on our bed were until I saw him constantly fluffing and rearranging them so he could get comfortable lying on them all day while he was feeling poorly.

By the next day, we had nice, new pillows on the bed. I got them for half-price at Macy’s during a white sale, which allowed me to splurge a little on a firm-but-down filling. Husband, who doesn’t usually notice when I replace something around the house, noticed this. The new pillows made him a little bit more comfortable for an uncomfortable few days.

2. Husband and I both love to read in bed, but we do it only for a few minutes at night before lying down and drifting off to sleep. So neither of us realized how uncomfortable it can be to sit up in bed for long stretches.

My solution: A gadget called a “husband” (not human), that looks a little like the top half of a chair, with a sturdy back and two armrests, and a couple of pockets for magazines and tissues. Combined with a fluffy down pillow, that “husband” helped make my husband feel cozy and supported for hours as he read and rested during his sick days.

3. Husband has to eat a little something before he takes his pills, but for a few days, he wasn’t supposed to race up and down the stairs from our second-story bedroom to the first-floor kitchen. For a couple of days, I tiptoed up the steps to leave a banana and a blueberry muffin on my sleeping patient's bedstand before I went to work in the morning so he could nibble on something before downing his medicine.
